The crypto market is highly competitive.
Indeed, many cryptos position themselves in the same sector (such as dApps, for example).
But there are also cryptos that help each other!
This is the case, for example, of Kusama crypto which serves as a research laboratory for another crypto, Polkadot (DOT).

What is Kusama (KSM) ?
Introduction
What is Kusama?
The Kusama blockchain was launched in May 2019.
The Kusama development team is the same as that of Polkadot.
As a reminder, Polkadot is a layer 0, i.e. a development environment for mutually compatible blockchains.
Among the developers of Kusama and Polkadot is Gavin Wood, known in the cryptosphere for his part in buildingEthereum! The Kusama and Polkadot blockchains were created together and are both layer 0 blockchain ecosystems.
In simple terms, Kusama can be seen as a “test blockchain” for the development of Polkadot.
In fact, Kusama is often referred to as the “Canary network”.
Why is this?
The analogy takes us back to the work of coal miners.
Canaries used to be present in the mines.
In the event of a toxic gas leak, the canaries would faint, alerting the workers to the danger.
Following this analogy, we could say that Kusama is a network that detects risks (or flaws) present on the Polkadot blockchain.
Unsurprisingly, Kusama shares the same technical characteristics as Polkadot.
The consensus protocol used is NPOS or Nominated Proof-Of-Stake, a variant of the classic POS used on Ethereum, for example.
Kusama’s architecture comprises the following two elements:
- A relay chain: this is Kusama’s main chain for managing transactions.
- Parachains, which are independent blockchains that can have their own token.
These chains are compatible with each other and interoperable with the relay chain via bridges.
The KSM is the native token of the Kusama ecosystem.
It is used to operate the blockchain, but also for its community governance.
What’s more, with NPOS, KSM holders who place their tokens in staking can occupy the roles of validator or numerator of the network.
Why choose Kusama?
Kusama is backed by Polkadot, a leading layer 0 blockchain.
Layer 0s meet the ever-increasing need for compatibility between blockchains.
The future of Kusama is therefore linked to that of Polkadot, considered by many to be one of the most ambitious projects.
But the great thing about Kusama is that this crypto is not just a Polkadot testnet!
A testnet has a native token which is generally worthless, which is not the case with the KSM token.
What’s more, Kusama differs from Polkadot in certain technical parameters.
Given that it is used for testing purposes, the Kusama network has better scalability than Polkadot.
What’s more, the Kusama blockchain is more innovative, since it implements new products before their official integration on Polkadot.
Created in open source, the Kusama blockchain is followed by a strong community of developers.

News Kusama in 2025
A Polkadot/Kusama – Ethereum bridge in the works.
At the end of November 2023, Parity Technologies, the firm in charge of developing Polkadot, announced that it was working on the design of a bridge that would make the Polkadot/Kusama blockchains interoperable with Ethereum. The KSM share price ends 2023 on a high note. Between October and the end of December 2023, the price of the KSM crypto increased 3-fold!
This fine performance is due in particular to the success of two projects in its ecosystem: Moorinver (MOVR), a parachain on which developers can create DEX, and Karura (KAR), a stablecoin platform.
